Gastroenterology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine that focuses on diseases of the digestive system. This includes diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Common problems covered include heartburn or acid reflux disease, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, and colon cancer screening. More complex issues may involve liver disease, hepatitis, pancreatic disease, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis), and Celiac Disease. The practice of gastroenterology does not involve surgical procedures but does include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. Appointments are available with Dr. Chang for general consultations as well as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.
